§ Name
Chrono Trigger is one of many games with gratituous name changes. In my humble opinion, the changes for Schala, Janus, Magus and the Gurus of Time were just fine. They sounded as interesting to English audiences as the way the original Japanese version's names sounded to their audiences. Sara サラ (Sara) is the original name of Schala in the Japanese game. She is addressed as サラ様 (Sara sama) by both the people of her kingdom and the Earthbound Ones. Sara also is the root of the Hebrew name 'Sarah' which has the meanings 'princess', 'importance', 'lady' and 'noble'. This was the name of Abraham's wife in the Bible. According to the Astrological Charts of Mister Vangelis, the following applies to the owner of this name: "Refined, critical, aesthetic. Religious nature. Kind and sympathetic towards those in trouble". Shala/Shahla I included this because I found it interesting and relevant, since Schala is the name most of us know her as. Although a pretty unique name, 'Schala' was likely given to the character by the game's translator (Ted Woosley) and is similar to ones with German, Middle Eastern and/or Muslim origins. Shala is Muslim and its generic meanings are: having grey eyes with a shade of red and a species of Nacissis flower. Shahla has Afghani origins meaning beautiful eyes. Zeal ジール was an english word taken literally. Zeal means enthusiastic devotion to a cause, ideal, or goal and tireless diligence in its furtherance. A Zealot is a fanatically committed person, sounds much like the subjects of Zeal's kingdom. Janus The first month of the calendar is named for Janus, who in Roman mythology was the god of portals. Janus was a two-faced god; one face saw the past and the other saw the future. Fitting for Janus who first travelled through time. Janus is known as ジャキ (Jaki) in the Japanese version. Magus The alias Janus took on as he got older. Comes from Latin and means someone who uses magic. It's the singular form of Magi, the three wise men. Magus is known as 魔王 (Devil) in the Japanese version. When he is disguised as the prophet, he's known as 予言者 (Prophet). Gurus of Time Melchior, Belthasar, and Gaspar the three wise men's names in the Bible. They're known as the 賢者 (Sages): ボッシュ (Bosh), ハッシュ (Hash), and ガッシュ (Gash) in the Japanese version. § back |
